Lonely Planet is buying a photograph I made

This picture of school kids in Mzuzu, Malawi was published in The Africa Book, a new type of book by Lonely Planet.

Photo competition
I joined a photo competition on the Lonely Planet website. My photo was one of 19 to be chosen out of hundreds of entries.

Coffee-table book
The Africa Book is not a travel guide, but 'a large, hardback coffee-table book that will delve into every country in Africa in depth with evocative and arresting images and imaginative text, and will also include thematic chapters about the continent' (LP).

The book came into the shops at the end of 2007.

"Muzungu, shoot me, shoot me!" these kids were yelling at me from the car that was taking them to school. They loved their photograph to be ‘shot’. I encountered this car on my way to the post office in Mzuzu, Malawi. Every time I see this picture I’m reminded of the typical Malawian sunny spirit and hospitality; despite poverty, famines and disease. It’s very humbling. The country’s nickname ‘The warm heart of Africa’ could not be more well-chosen.

This text I wrote was printed alongside the picture. - Cécile
